Little Star
OK, first ever review...brought this little machine to replace a 19'' dual core 1.67 Hz laptop which had died. Had this for about 2 weeks now and used it for uni work and general surfing.
Overall this is a fantastic piece of kit. Well put together, does exactly what it says on the tin. I got rid of the pre-loaded software straight away, but kept xp. Installed Chrome, Winamp and VLC and it has run without a hitch. MATLAB installed and ran very fast. Connection to home wireless network was straight forward - just enter WEP key - and download/surfing speeds have been fine.
I have got used to the keyboard straight away, except the up and down keys being split in half and squeezed into one space. Not a real issue though. The matt screen is perfect in every lighting as far as im concerned and would now not buy anything else.
The sound from headphones is very good quality from such a cheap machine.
The best bit is the battery life, which just seems to go on forever. It charges in about 2 hours and then lasts an entire day at work on wifi. It has even lasted for over 4 hours playing Altitude (Steam game using internet connection).
Close the lid and put it into sleep mode and then open it up and you will be back logged on, connected to wifi and surfing in about 10secs.
It looks beautiful in almost carbon fibre finish, but does scratch quite easily - buy a case for a tenner. The adaptor is small and hardly weighs anything.
No need to upgrade to 2Gb ram, Windows 7 or Wireless N for anything more than everyday use. Dont worry about the model with the larger battery either as you wont need it.
Hard drive comes pre-partioned, master = 80Gb, slave = 62.
Fantastic little machine. Cannot fault it. Buy now before the XP version dissappears as Windows 7 is a lot heavier.
Asus Eee PC 1001P Netbook
I bought this Netbook because I have an HP 17" Laptop and its too big to use in a car or on an airplane, etc.
I was a bit apprihensive about which one to buy and if Netbooks were any good, also I thought that the 10" display may be too small, how ever when I used the 1001P I was so supprised how good it is. It starts up in no time, the battery lasts about 8 hours depending on usage (1001P has larger battery than some other 1001 models) and it works faster that my £600 HP Laptop.
Also the mouse pad is great, to scroll up/Down or Left/Right just put two fingers on the mouse pad and drag which way you want and to rotate just use two fingers and twist them around on the mouse pad, after a week its just natural to do it.
Also there is a second power button that starts the Netbook up in a special mode for the internet, email, skype etc. You can be surfing the net in a few seconds.
As with all Netbooks there so no CD/DVD Drive but if you need one there are many external optical drives on the market for a reasonable price.
I am so glad that I bought this little Netbook and would recomend it to anyone that needs a small machine to take around with them, in fact I hardly ever use my Laptop now I have the Netbook.
All in all a great little Netbook at a good price and that suits me.
Brilliant Netbook but some annoyances.
This Netbook is good value for money. I bought the XP version of this Netbook because I wanted to have a dual XP / Linux Ubuntu on it. So the W7 version would have been a waste of cash. I won't comment on getting Ubuntu installed because that is not relevant to the Netbook as supplied (However it would have been helpful to have been provided information on partition use in the sparse User Manual: See Post #88 at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1396074&page=9 ).
I do like the black carbon fibre like Netbook shell. So much nicer that the glossy shells on other Netbooks that show up dust and fingerprints.
It runs quietly and the fan is almost silent.
The speed running XP is good at this early stage and Ubuntu is even faster.
The display can be set very bright and this puts my 5yo laptop "in the shade".
Use of the keyboard is generally pretty good. It doesn't feel cramped because despite having big hands I have long "pianists" fingers.
The Delete key is at the top right of the keyboard unlike keyboards I am used to that have Del on the right hand side of the bottom row of keys.
I was slightly annoyed that I had to use Fn+PgUp or Fn+PgDn to page up or down.
ASUS Express Gate / Splashtop: I am pleased with the less than 8 second boot but am disappointed with the default sound devices of hdmi for Skype. I had to set Skype first to Default, close Skype, start Skype then set sound devices to HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0). These settings do not get retained on shutdown of Express Gate. It is really annoying to have to change sound devices to HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0) every time.
ASUS/Skype need to fix this error.
