size is everything!
I was in the market to buy a netbook for 6 months or more. And in that time I checked out just about every machine on the market. Eventually concluding that the best machines out there, were the Toshiba NB205 and the little Sony. But neither was just right, so I held off.
Both machines were excellent in many ways - featuring the best processors, excellent displays, brilliant keyboards and great flexibility.
However, I felt the Sony was over-priced, and its display impractical for web browsing. Whilst the Toshiba wasn't quite the finished article.
That changed with the release of the NB305.
With this new machine, Toshiba have addressed all the shortcomings of the old model. Producing an excellent all round performer, that is a genuine pleasure to use.
Innovative features - like a motion sensor to protect the HDD if the machine is dropped, and 11 hour battery life (that's my experience - not the manufacturers claim.) are simply inspired. Whilst small things - like the tilted keyboard and built-in Wi-Fi, just make this machine easy to live with. But the best bits are the processor, display and keyboard - which are simply not bettered anywhere.
A word to the wise however, forget the black models - they have a completely different keyboard - which is merely ordinary. And also make a point of buying both the RAM upgrade and a decent external disc drive - this will make life much easier.
Also, don't get suckered into buying a non-UK spec machine. US spec machines are advertised for far less than UK spec ones - because they are stripped down versions. Without many useful features - like bluetooth.
So if you want a small, light, stylish netbook, that will rival many full-sized portable PC's - buy this.
A Nice Bit Of Kit
I bought this netbook earlier from another supplier because it wasn't then available through amazon.co.uk, but I see it is now.
I already have a Toshiba Portege M700 tablet NOTEbook, but it's a bit heavy and unwieldy, so it spends most of the time in keyboard mode.
Due to my work life which involves long haul flights in cattle class, I wanted a netbook tablet version as the size is easier to manage on the meal tray on airline seats, plus I wanted something lighter to take to meetings, sit in the lounge at home etc.
But I got frustrated reading about upcoming netbook tablets which mentioned 'touch screen' because that doesn't necessarily mean it can allow handwriting in tablet mode.
So I went for the Toshiba NB305 and have no regrets.
Pros:
Light weight
Good build quality
Outstanding battery life
Cons
Keyboard keys slightly smaller than my wife's Samsung NC10
RAM, only 1 Gb, standard
Windows 7 Starter, standard
I have ordered a 2 Gb RAM upgrade, easy to install, will handle my other planned upgrade to Windows Professional. I know I won't have a much memory to run all my software (Office 2007, OneNote 2007, SmartDraw 2010 etc) at the same time, but I will be able to copy and synchronise data between the NB305 and Portege.
excellent
Purchased this on recommendation of a friend. Very pleased with the purchase. At the moment I'm using it with a Three 3g dongle, can't comment on battery life yet but its looking good. I also purchased the 2gB RAM upgrade and can run Office 2007 without problem. I've upgraded to windows 7 Pro and again this is running fine. Use yhis alongside a Dell XPS M1300, which although a faster processor and 64 bit is getting used less since purchase of the Toshiba.
Excellent product, only slight gripe is I can't install a 3g module inside the netbook like my XPS but that's only downside so far.
More to follow . . .
