Quality graphics, video and sound performance
The compact 11.6 inch HD LED BrightView widescreen display delivers a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels which delivers crisp and vibrant colours. Graphic performance is achieved using an NVIDIA ION LE graphics processor which turns up the visuals on compact, low-power notebooks with greater performance than similar systems.
An integrated webcam and microphone and the latest Altec Lansing speakers, will give you great quality Internet-based video and audio communication. So for example, if you’re using MSN or Skype, your friends and family will be able to hear and see you perfectly. And if you just want to capture the moment, use your webcam to take still photos or video.
Great expansion and connectivity
![]() Experience excellent connectivity with an array of onboard ports |
The Mini 311c will accommodate up to three peripherals at any time with its three USB 2.0 ports enabling you to quickly transfer photos from your digital video camera or music from your MP3 player.
In terms of connectivity, this mini incorporates a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet LAN, so you can quickly and easily share your files with your family, friends and colleagues. It is WiFi certified to work with base stations and routers that use industry-standard 802.11 b/g making it easy for you to connect rapidly to the internet at home, work and on holiday. The 110c also features integrated Bluetooth wireless networking capability, to enable you to connect directly to a wireless keyboard or mouse, and synchronise your mobile phone or PDA.
Hard drive and memory
The 160 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) maintains high data transfer speeds, meaning you don’t need to wait long for your documents and pictures to open. To support this, the Mini 311c comes with 1 GB memory as standard and supports up to 1 GB DDR3 memory.
DDR3 is the next generation memory, twice as fast as its predecessor DDR2. DDR3 offers an impressive increased performance whilst using less power, only 1.5 volts. Rapid data transfer speeds of up to 1600 Mbps allow you to run many simultaneous tasks.

HP/Compaq Mini 311
Super netbook. The larger screen 11.6" (1366x768) and advanced graphics for little extra money make this a compelling choice over the 10" screen brigade led by the Samsung N140. Some gaming is possible, whereas on a standard netbook it isn't even an option. Happily running Windows 7 Ultimate with a 2Gb memory upgrade. HD WMV Video's play well, with only very, very minor stuttering.
The Good:
Larger HD 11.6" screen with good clarity and backlighting a joy to use over a cramped 10"
Accelerated NVidia Ion graphics
Easy to upgrade memory to 3Gb
Quite loud and clear Altec Lansing Speaker strip on the front
HD Video support (inc 1080p to external display) - WMV play especially well
HDMI Port
Attractive design
Respectable speed
The Bad:
Touchpad is annoying
Atom 270 struggles on CPU intensive tasks
Flash Support still waiting proper Ion Acceleration fronm Adobe - Adobe AIR based BBC iPlayer still stutters, even on SD
Battery is 6 hours at very best, 5 hours common. not a patch here on a Samsung N140m but a more compelling netbook to live with on a day in, day out basis.
Hewlett Packard/Compaq UK still won't ship with Windows 7 - Insane descision
As with all netbooks, need to purchase an external DVD - a Samsung SE-804 for £40 good choice.
Overall:
A more usable netbook than a 10" model, with HD support, HDMI output and an attracive design with an appealing price point.
Very Robust Netbook - Great Value
This computer is an excelllent choice if you are looking for an ultra portable computer, but don't want to pay a fortune and still want big laptop functionality. The Nvidia ION paired with the higg-def screen, fast HDD, and fast RAM make this computer a great performer.
Do note that in order to utilize the full power of the ION graphics chip you need to fiddle around a bit with software and drivers. Also, in order to get graphic acceleration for youtube videos you need adobe flash 10.1 which is still in beta.
All in all, very recommendable!
Fabulous little machine!
I purchased this 'box opened' for £100 off, chucked in a couple more Gb of RAM and installed Ubuntu Linux on it. Everything works a treat and I still have the XP partition if I need to boot up into Windows for some reason, not that I have felt the need...
The LED backlit monitor is a bit bluer than your normal non-LED screen - probably the LED hue is nearer to what you want so that is an observation and not a problem. The resolution - 1366 x 768 - is what you want in a netbook as nothing is compromised. The Nvidia Ion graphics are fast enough to run all of the desktop effects and you can run funky screen savers to show off with.
Battery life is excellent, no need to carry around a brick wherever you go, just charge up overnight and you should be fine. There is a fan in the machine but this whispers rather than roars.
I very much like the keyboard and the trackpad is doing it for me, even if some naysayers beg to differ. My only gripe with the keyboard is the text size on the function keys, sometimes you need to carefully look before you press.
My colleagues are very envious of this little PC and, as mentioned, I did get lucky with the price. I would not bother hanging around waiting for the price to come down, at full retail this machine is a gem. Spend the money and you will not regret it.
Because this machine is so light 'n' useful it is great for when working with colleagues. I can be at their desk and be able to quickly look things up. Some notebooks are behemoths that are just not flexible in that way. It is also useful at home, in front of the teevee I can still get on with my work unobtrusively.
I have no complaints on the build quality and if you don't have a posh neoprene case to keep a Mini 311 in then you can do what I do - use a 8 x 12 inch jiffy bag - £1.29 should keep things scratch free and the weight+faffing time down.
