Great netbook, but I still prefer the N1104
First off - yes these are great netbooks, very well-optimised to the task of low-bulk mobile computing. With the long battery life you can leave the power supply and the laptop bag at home, pop the netbook into its slipcase and do a day trip. Samsung netbooks are sturdily built and almost silent in operation - an advantage over Asus. If you are new to netbooks: Windows 7 is great but don't expect miracles. The processor is much lower power than a conventional one and this means they run slower. The screen resolution is 1024 x 600 (WSVGA) and it's best to auto-hide the taskbar so that it doesn't take up screen space when it's not needed.

The N210/N220 netbooks are redesigned versions of the N110/N140 netbooks of 2009 using Intel's new version of its low power Atom platform, "Pine Trail". By integrating the graphics card on the same chip as the processor, the new processor achieves even longer battery life, which is always useful. The N220, which is just £10 more than the N210, has a "sub-woofer" which improves the sound from the speakers of the N210 and its predecessors, which is loud but tinny. The sound is really a lot better. However there are a number of other changes with the new models, and it's not all good news.

First of all, Samsung have replaced the normal power switch with a slider on the front lip, which is fiddly and inconvenient. Some will find it irritates the finger when operated. Opinion is also divided about the new keyboard. Samsung have ditched the very successful keyboard of the N110/N140 and gone for a calculator style keyboard, which has more space between the keys, but smaller keys. It looks fantastic and it does work, but in the words of one review, keyboards are for typing on, not for looking at. The new keyboard is not quite as good as the previous one for typing.

Also new is the inclusion of "Hyperspace", a quick-boot operating system (it's Linux in fact) that allows you to surf the web without booting Windows 7. What's the point of this? Windows 7 boots really fast!

Regarding the screen, these new LED screens are so bright that the conventional wisdom of "matt screen better than gloss screen in sunlight" doesn't really apply. In the previous generation, the N110 (never available on amazon) had the gloss screen and the N140 the matt screen. I have an N110 and it performs just fine working outdoors in sunlight, whilst the matt screen suffers a slight loss in definition (that's how they work). There's no gloss option in the new models and I feel that's a pity.

General points: do uninstall McAfee, which is far too resource hungry for a netbook, and install a free virus programme such as Avast. However don't uninstall Office - you don't have to use it if you don't want it, and as there is no CD drive, you'll regret it if you change your mind. I bought an Office license with the machine and you just type in the code that's inside the box. Yes you can easily upgrade the memory to 2GB, but unless you plan to run multiple applications in parallel (e.g. Word and Excel), something for which netbooks are not really intended, it may not be necessary.
If you are confused about the different versions of Windows 7: Windows 7 starter (W7S)is just fine for a netbook. Whilst it deosn't allow you to change the default wallpaper, if you really want to you can change it with some third party software - no need to buy an upgrade just for that.

You should also know that when you boot the machine for the first time, you have to go through the process of installing the included software and partitioning the hard disk, all of which takes ages. Samsung recommend two equal partitions, the idea being that you use the second (D:) to back up the first (C:), and given the hard disk's enormous size this is not a bad idea for most people. However if you have a lot of data to carry around that you back up elsewhere, I'd suggest increasing the size of the D: partition to 160GB and using it for your data files.

Overall: the N110 was just the perfect netbook, and the gloss screen performed better than the matt screen, even in sunlight. The N220 does improve battery life and has better sound, but the changes to the power switch and to the keyboard are a backward step.

    Wow5
I own around 6 notebooks at present and have experienced over a dozen. I previously preferred Sony Vaio notebooks and have had 5 of these. This netbook is a revelation. Fantastic battery life, great keyboard, 3 USB ports, nippy processor, great looks and a really good feel to it. It is the feel that is a particular attraction for me. Compared to the mini Vaio notebooks this netbook is slick, it is not plasticky like the Toshiba notebook I have and it feels like a real notebook.
The HyperSpace function allows you to run a Linux system which boots instantly and gives you web access as well as playing videos or music. It works and the interface is cute.
The trackpad is very Macbook like and allows you to use pinch, two finger scrolling and three finger browser back (a personal favorite).
The screen is crisp and bright.

I would recommend this netbook without any hesitation at all.

Great Notebook well worth the money5
    Think Portability/Travel, Prtability/Travel, Prtability/Travel.

I used this Samsung N220 for a week or so and found it to be a really great notebook.

Primerily looking for ultra portability, strong build and long battery life the N220 really delivered.

If you want something for traveling this is a great choice due to its solid uncluttered construction, Very clear well detailed 10.1" matt screen (ideal for outdoors as it is non reflective) and long battery life (I got 8-10 hours out of it for general computing which is great (It is advertised as having 11 hours life)

The keyboard looks like it has punch buttons but they work very well and keep the construction to the robust theam found in the general design of this notebook.

The Touch pad was also good and responsive, however due to the naturaly small size the left and right mouse clickers were a little fiddely compared to a full size unit.

Boots up quickly with Windows 7 stater edition which is also simple to navigate, reliable with great functionality. Better than XP and streets ahead of Vista, everything is made easy with Windows 7.

Samsung include Hyper Space fast start which is their front end/Desktop which is meant to enhance battery life and performance but I just found it irritating, thankfully you can choose to turn it off or on.

This unit does not have a DVD player so you will need to buy an external DVDRW that will be powered from the USB. I used the LG DVDRW Model Number GP08NU20 which worked sraight out of the box with this Samsung notebook.

    The Notebook has 3 x USB, I x VGA out, SD card reader, 3.5mm Headphone scocket, bluetooth & Wireless B,G & N

When I fist turned the machine on and it did the usual windows updates the machine seemed slow and slugish but after a day it seemed to speed up, no idea why, and worked well. Not as fast as a standard laptop but still very usable. It played DVD movies fine however when using MPEG4 video on the Windows Media player software the play back was jurky, by downloading QuckTime player from the apple web site and using that to watch MPEG4 video the problem when away.

One thing that did suprise me was the sound quality, which was fantastic for let alone a laptop but for a notbook of this side was magic. It has a small subwoofer as well as left and right speakers which makes the difference, you can actualy play music and find it listenable, unlike most every other laptop.

The Notebook has the latest Intel Atom N450 1.66Ghz processor and comes with a single slot for the RAM. The RAM supplied is 1GB but you could swap this out for a maximum of 2GB. It also has a super 250GB hard drive which you can choose the partition size of when it first starts up.

Software includes Microsoft Works for viewing and making word & spreadsheet documents etc. It also has a trial version of Windows office Home Student 2007 and windows Live Suite which has a great photo viewer and e-mail application (replaces outlook express I gess)plus other security software & sumsung software.

Size wise it is 272mm wide x 188.5mm deep x 29.8mm thich and weighs 1.2kg, the A/C power adaptor is also very small ideal for travel.

So a realy great travel companion then which an be used on the road or at home.
