Asus Netbook
Overall, I'm happy with this netbook. It does what I expected it to do. I only wanted it for the internet, and have had no trouble thus far with basic Facebook, hotmail, gmail etc, and also does the trick with youtube, and streaming music. Skype works ok, and you get used to the small screen. Its a bit annoying having to scroll on some websites, but you get used to it. You can always use the touchpad to shrink the page. If you have too many windows open at once, it tends to freeze, and say "not responding", but if you wait a few minutes, it usually comes right on its own. Battery lasts well, and the charger is smaller than I expected, which will be good for travelling. The webcam is clear, and the microphone picks up sound well - If your volume is up too loud on Skype, the microphone will pick it up.
Overall, I'm happy with the computer.
Worth the money, pity it's Windows.
We were looking for a replacement for our old Asus 904 which had been passed on to an elderly relative and decided on this. It costs more than the Dell Mini 10 but looks a lot nicer, in fact it's very pretty indeed, and has a more up to date chip set.
It does everything it says on the box, but Windows 7 takes about 4 hours to get running and updated properly. If it gives us any problems it'll get dumped and Ubuntu will get fitted.
I wish Asus had kept making netbooks with Linux on them and SSDs and not hard disks
The whole thing doesn't look that rugged, although it has a nice solid feel. I imagine we'll find out exactly how rugged it is when we take it on an aircraft sometime.
We'll we dumping the Microsoft Office and fitting Open Office as soon as the free MS Office license runs out...
The rest: The camera is nice, decent sound, microphone works ok, just about full size keyboard, it comes with Skype already loaded, battery runs almost forever.
Oh, the other reviewer who says it has two drives is wrong, it's a single drive configured as two drives and you don't get the option to change that at set-up time.
-----------------------------------------
We've now had this for five months and finally decided that 'Windows Starter' was a load of rubbish so I put Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook onto it. After the reasonably well documented problems with sound were addressed it became a much faster and more useful device altogether.
This isn't an upgrade for someone who doesn't know how to start a 'console session' in Linux, but for someone who does know what they're doing it turns a fairly slow netbook into a very useful computer indeed.
Shiny Netbook
I am very happy with my shiny ASUS 1005p netbook. Although you get smudges- it a small price to pay. The best thing about this netbook is the keyboard- it is easy to type because the keys are completely flat- thus more surface area. The battery lasts a long time thanks to the 6 cell battery and N450. The webcam is good quality.
In the description of the product it says it comes with a introduction cd and a sleeve. These were both missing- but since I don't have a cd drive I don't care!
